Woman Gored To Death In Village Fiesta Bullrun
A 64-year-old woman has been fatally gored by a bull after running into its path during a traditional bull-running event in central Spain.
The incident happened in Ayna, a small town in Albacete province in the Castilla-La Mancha region on 5 September.
Footage shows the woman standing inside the route on the wrong side of a metal safety barrier as a herd of bulls approaches.
She initially remains near the barrier and waves her hands towards the animals as they run past.
But as the herd moves along the road, the woman suddenly runs further down the route in the same direction as the bulls.
One of the animals trailing behind the herd then turns towards her and charges.
The bull slams the woman against a concrete wall before attacking her with its horns as she lies on the ground.
People watching from behind and on top of the barriers can be heard shouting, but nobody is seen entering the route while the animal continues the attack.
The bull eventually turns away and runs off after the rest of the herd.
Emergency services said the victim, who was from Catalonia and was staying with relatives in a hamlet belonging to Ayna, suffered serious injuries from the bull’s horns.
She received emergency treatment at the scene and was being taken to a helipad for evacuation when she died.
A second participant, a man aged about 60, was injured in the arm by another bull at a different point along the route and was taken to Albacete Hospital.
Ayna mayor Juan Ángel Martínez said the woman had become frightened when she saw the animals approaching and had run in the wrong direction while trying to escape.
The bull run formed part of Ayna’s annual patron saint festivities, which were taking place from 3 to 8 September.
The town council cancelled the remaining festivities scheduled for that Saturday following the death.
A medical helicopter and officers from Spain’s Civil Guard were deployed following the incident.
