Another Name Change For Athletico´s Metropolitana Stadium
Athletico Madrid has announced a new name for its Estadio Metropolitano which will now be known as the Riyadh Air Metropolitano
for a further 9 seasons until 2033.
The sponsorship deal deepens the Saudi airline agreement with the club which had started at the beginning of the season with its logo on the “rojiblanco” shirts worth some €40m.
The new agreement sees Riyadh take over from travel platform Civitas as the Madrid club´s principal sponsor in a deal valued at between 250m and €300m, according to Spanish financial paper Expansión.
Since Athletico Madrid moved to the 68,000 seater stadium in 2017 the club has seen several sponsors including Wanda Group and Civitatis,
The unveiling of the new stadium name is expected for October 20th in the Spanish Liga match against fellow Madrid side Leganés on October 20th.
As part of the partnership, a Riyadh Air club will also be created in the hospitality area of the venue.
It is believed the move will allow the Saudi airline, which was founded last year by the Kingdom´s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, to pitch to competing with other Gulf airlines and to establish the Riyadh as a major traffic hub and destination.
