Cañas With The King
The King of Spain, Felipe VI, entertained the President of Portugal, Rebelo de Souza, in central Madrid this week with a walkabout outside the Royal Palace and a few beers ( cañas) in a local terraza in the Plaza Oriente.
The two heads of state met well wishers and passersby as they went for a stroll and a few beers, before settling into a light lunch at the iconic Café de Oriente restaurant in front of the palace.
The President of Portugal maintains close relations with the Spanish king, and is a frequent visitor to Madrid.
They last met at the Iberian- South American Summit, held in Andorra in April.
They both attended the friendly football match between Spain and Portugal at the Wanda Metropolitana on Friday 4th June.
The match is a warm up for the FIFA European Cup tournament beginning next week, resulted in a 0.0 draw in front of 15,000 fans from both nations.
Spain and Portugal are pitching to jointly host the the 2030 World Cup – the 100th anniversary of the world´s premier football tournament.
Spain last hosted the cup in 1982.
