LEGO – The Madrid Exhibition

Since its humble launch in Denmark in 1958 – the Lego brick has become an international phenomenon as well as one of the most well-known brands in the world.

The name ‘LEGO’ is an abbreviation of the two Danish words “leg godt”, meaning “play well,” which the company claim is “our name and our ideal”.

Madrid is now hosting the largest exhibition of models built using Lego® bricks in Europe at the Plaza Rio 2 shopping centre in the latest venue for a touring exhibition that has seen it in 7 countries.

The exhibition includes a 1:25 scale replica of the Titanic built with half a million pieces and which measures 11 metres long and almost 3 metres high.

Befitting its Madrid setting the exhibition will include references to its host including Madrid emblematic statue of the bear and the strawberry tree as well as other stand out pieces including an interactive map of Europe showing the borders of the countries, their capitals, European flags and principalities, and different places around the world such as the Taj Mahal, the Sydney Opera House, the Tower of London, and the Roman Forum.

Sport is also represented in the form of Martina Navratilova, the famous Czech tennis player, built in tremendous detail using 50,000 bricks and measuring 173 cm in height; Robert Lewandowski, one of the most popular footballers in the world, and Marcin Gortat, the only Polish player in NBA history, a 214 cm high figure made using 120,000 LEGO bricks.

In addition, the exhibition features superhero figures, historical references such as the first moon landing and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall; the Star Wars-inspired zone; large models with moving trains; musical instruments such as a guitar, accordion, violin, trumpet, and drums; and the special Fun Park area with tables to play with bricks, a space to build huge pieces, and many more attractions.
