Madrid Andy Warhol Poster Exhibition

An exhibition of posters by Andy Warhol is being hosted by the Mateo Inurria Canal Foundation

The exhibition is free to enter and runs until 4th May and encompass a total of 134 pieces created by the American artist, from 1962 until the end of his career. The exhibition shows Warhol’s posters as a tangible display of his genius, delving into his legacy and demonstrating how art and advertising were merged in his work.

Warhol (1928-1987) is considered one of the most influential artists of the post war era and credited with being the instigator behind the “pop art” genre from the 1960s.

His oeuvre encompasses a variety of media, including painting and film, and is characterised by the development of a distinctive and idiosyncratic style. His experience as a publicist and graphic designer enabled him to incorporate posters as a relevant and permanent expression in his artistic career.

This exhibition is notable for its presentation of one of the most extensive collections to date of the renowned posters by the iconic pop art artist, and it is meticulously organised into six thematically-focused sections: early posters, wallpapers, adaptations and graphic series, late posters, portraits, and records and publications. The initial five segments are dedicated to the various types of posters he produced, while the final segment showcases his contributions to records and publications.

The exhibition will feature 134 pieces, showcasing a selection of Andy Warhol’s most iconic and emblematic images. These include his inaugural folded posters for mailers distributed by the gallery proprietor Leo Castelli, the promotional posters for Chanel No. 5, the portraits of notable figures such as Marilyn Monroe, and the cover designs for eminent musical groups including The Rolling Stones and The Velvet Underground.

The exhibition, curated in collaboration with the Hamburg Museum of Art and Industry, will be presented in Madrid as one of the most extensive collections of his renowned posters to date, offering a comprehensive exploration into the enduring legacy of this seminal figure in pop art.
