Rubiales Arrested At Madrid´s Barajas Airport
The Spanish Civil Guard have arrested the former head of the Spanish football federation.
Rubiales was detained at Madrid’s Barajas Airport after returning from a trip to the Dominican Republic this week.
Spanish media footage showed Rubiales being escorted from the plane by officers before being questioned inside the airport. He was released a few hours later. An investigative judge is expected to summon him for more questioning in the coming days.
The former head of Spanish football is being investigated for alleged acts of corruption and improper management in connection with the rehabilitation of Seville’s La Cartuja stadium and the staging of the Super Cup football match in Saudi Arabia.
Rubiales, who has denied any wrongdoing, returned to Spain voluntarily. He was released after questioning.
Rubiales stepped down as president of the Spanish Football Federation last year after causing an international scandal for kissing Spain player Jenni Hermoso without her consent at the Women’s World Cup final in which Spain beat England.
He is facing a trial for allegedly sexually assaulting Hermoso. He has denied any wrongdoing in that case.
Spanish prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for sexual assault and coercion.
