An Irish Christmas Comes To Madrid
The critically acclaimed Irish documentary “So This Is Christmas,” directed by award-winning filmmaker Ken Wardrop, is set to make its Madrid debut on December 12, 2024.
The screening will be held at the Cines Princesa near Plaza España, as part of its Spanish tour, which debuted last week in Barcelona.
The film which offers audiences a poignant exploration of the holiday season’s complexities delves into the lives of five individuals in a small Irish village, each grappling with personal challenges during the festive period.
The documentary provides a heart-warming and, at times, heart-rending portrayal of resilience and the true essence of Christmas. Irish broadcaster RTÉ, said the film “lands like a punch to the gut,” offering a “must-watch creative documentary, heart-breaking and heart-warming in equal measure.”
The film had its world premiere at the Cork International Film Festival on November 10, 2023, and opened in Irish cinemas on November 17, 2023. It has since garnered critical acclaim, with the Sunday Independent (Ireland) stating, “The assumption with any films themed around Christmas is they will become seasonal staples. This could very well transpire with Wardrop’s latest jewel, such is the kindly, twinkle-eyed embrace it administers.”
While Rotten Tomatoes reviews have been fulsome with Lisa Dempsey of the Film Ireland Magazine saying that “I struggle to see how anyone wouldn’t be able to relate to the people in this film in some way. It is an absolutely beautiful depiction of these subjects that was executed extremely well”.
The Madrid premiere will also feature a special Q&A session featuring Director Ken Wardrop following the screening.
