Final Demolition Of Vicente Calderon Stadium
The iconic former home ground of Atletico Madrid football has finally been totally demolished with the last stand falling on Monday.
The stadium which was planned in the 1950s and finally opened in 1966 was originally called the Estadio Manzanares due to the river that runs by it.
The ground has seen seen it´s share of footballing glory . Athletico Madrid played 1.227 games in the stadium with 775 victories, 257 draws and 195 defeats with 2.308 goals scored against visiting teams whilst conceding 1,038 goals.
It has also hosted some of the great concerts of the last few decades starting with the Rolling Stones in 1982 and including David Bowie, Placido Domingo, Bon Jovi, One Direction, Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson.
The ground will now be re-developed for housing and shopping with work expected to start in 2021. The new development called Mahou-Calderón is a total of nearly 200,000 square metres including public gardens and community facilities which will complete the transformation of the area.
