Footage Released Of Half Sunk Narco Sub Off Spanish Coast

This footage shows how the Spanish authorities found a narco sub half sunk and adrift off their coast.

The vessel was first spotted by a fisherman in the Atlantic Ocean near Muxia and Costa da Morte, off the coast of Coruna, in north-eastern Spain, on the morning of Tuesday, 21st January.

The footage shows the vessel with part of its hull sticking out of the water as it was apparently taking on water.

The submarine was said to be 20 metres (65 feet) long but part of it reportedly broke off, with the authorities locating the sunken part between 100 and 200 metres (330 and 650 feet) from the part that was still afloat.

The authorities reportedly found the part of the sub that was still floating with its hatch open, with local reports saying that its crew had probably tried to sink it.

It is unclear if the Spanish authorities have found any drugs on the vessel, which is believed to have been used to smuggle illegal substances like cocaine from Latin America to Europe.

The authorities used divers to try to refloat the sunken part of the vessel and said that they believe it may have been used just 48 hours prior to smuggle drugs into Spain.

As of the evening of Wednesday, 22nd January, the part that had not sunk was being towed to port by the Spanish authorities.

The Civil Guard said in a statement on 22nd January: “The Civil Guard is investigating the discovery of a suspected narco-submarine on the morning of this Wednesday at the entrance to the Camarinas estuary.

“Personnel from the Maritime Service of A Coruna, the Citizen Security Unit (Usecic), and the Judicial Police were deployed to the port of Camarinas.”
