Huge Crowds Greet Pope At Bernabeu Stadium

This is the moment Pope Leo XIV arrives at Madrid´s iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium for an open air mass wrapping up the papal visit to the capital yesterday, 8th June.

The video footage released by the Spanish National Police shows the stadium packed with people as the Pope’s arrives under heavy escort.

The crowd repeatedly chanted “Papa Leon!” and “Ole, ole, ole!” as the pontiff made his entrance before adressing those gathered.

Around 80,000 Catholics reportedly attended the event, with the police saying at 10:18pm: “Tonight we bid you good night with the images from the Pope’s final event in Madrid, a gathering at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Tomorrow, he will continue his journey through Spain and we will keep you informed. Rest well, good night.”

Earlier in the day, Pope Leo visited the Cathedral of Our Lady of Almudena, where he placed a golden rose before an image of the Virgin Mary.

In an unscripted remark, the pope said: “I think that for a player, scoring a goal in this stadium is a major milestone in life. But … today, the Church in Madrid scored an amazing goal that will go down in history!”

The pope also encouraged Catholics to bear witness to the Gospel in the Spanish capital and said cities remained hungry for justice and truth.

The gathering concluded with Pope Leo leading the Our Father and giving his apostolic blessing before continuing his apostolic journey through Spain.
