Laureus World Sports Awards Set For Madrid
Some of the world´s leading sports figures are expected in Madrid next week for the 25th Laureus World Sports Awards, considered as the Oscars of the sports industry which is being held in the Cibeles Palace on 22 April.
Some of the biggest names in the world of sport, including 15 Olympic champions will be in the capital to honour their peers including some of the greatest sportsmen and women and teams in 7 categories for the best of human physical excellence in 2023.
Each of the Winners will receive the coveted Laureus Statuette, one of most recognisable symbols of excellence in sport.
This is the 25th year the Laureus World Sports Awards have been presented and the fifth time the event has been held in Spain, following Barcelona (2006, 2007) and Seville (2021 and 2022). On this occasion, Madrid is taking over from Paris, which hosted last year’s award ceremony in which sportsmen and women like Lionel Messi, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and the Spanish tennis player, Carlos Alcaraz, were winners.
The Laureus Awards recognise the most memorable sporting performances from last year; a year in which Madrid welcomed home the FIFA Women’s World Cup winners after their victory in Australia. In 2023, Novak Djokovic also led tennis’s golden generation, only being beaten by Carlos Alcaraz, in a thrilling Wimbledon final. On the other hand, the World Athletics Championships featured showstopping performances from athletes such as Faith Kipyegon, Sha’Carri Richardson, Shericka Jackson, Mondo Duplantis and Noah Lyles.
This year’s nominees in the seven categories will be announced on 26 February, after voting by the world’s media. The Gala will also include the Laureus Sport for Good Award, which recognises a person or organisation that has contributed significantly to transforming the lives of children and young people through sport.
Since it was founded, Laureus has helped to improve the lives of more than six and a half million children and young people, and currently supports more than 300 sport-based community programmes worldwide. By doing so, it helps to fulfil the visionary words of its founder, Nelson Mandela: “Sport has the power to change the world”.
