Madrid Makes Top Ten Dog Friendly Global Cities

New research by UK based Benchmark Kennels show that Madrid has made it into the global top 10 of dog-friendly cities for the first time.

Their summary of the Spanish capital said it is “actually one of the most dog-friendly cities, having an average daytime temperature of around 20.5°C”.

According to their data there are 793 dog walking services and 127 dog groomers in the city.

Added to Madrid´s 36 parks and 121 pet stores there has never been a better time to be a pooch in the city.

Surprisingly, Madrid came ahead of Paris and way ahead of arch-rivals Barcelona, who only just made it to the list.

In recent years Madrid has seen an increasing number of establishments that cater to two legged customers with four legged family members.

The recent change in the law in Spain means that they are now family members and have real animal rights.

Visitors are advised to check with the hotel or apartment, indicating the breed and weight, to know whether they accept pets and if there is a supplement to be paid.

More and more hotels in Madrid are dog-friendly including such chains as Petit Palace, which offer specific services such as a pet bed, food and toys.

Madrid also know boasts and array of pet hotels as well as pet grooming salons, doga centres (yoga with dogs), and numerous vets’ clinics open 24 hours a day.

If you think your pet has star quality – of course you do – why not enter your dog in one of capital´s many pet fairs including those of Perrotón (a charity run to promote the responsible adoption of pets), the Fiestas de San Antón (did you know that during these festivities people take their pets to the Church of San Antón, the patron saint of animals, to have them blessed?) or initiatives such as Guau, ¡qué alucine!, where owners can take their dogs to a huge drive-in cinema to attend workshops, eat at gastronetas and of course watch a film under the stars!
