Madrid Welcomes Spanish Team After Historic European Cup Win

Tens of thousands of Madrileños thronged the streets of Madrid to welcome the  Spanish team to the capital yesterday following their 2 – 1 victory over England in the European Cup in Berlin.

After winning its fourth European Championship, 60 years after winning the first one in Madrid, the national team celebrated their historic win after Arriving at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport yesterday carrying the European Championship Henri Delaunay trophy.

The team had official receptions with King Felipe V and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez but the main event was the rapturous welcome to La Roja as supporters gathered at Cibeles Square and lined the streets for Spain’s open-top bus parade through Madrid´s proud streets.

The team´s bus was adorned with the message “it’s only the beginning” and the trophy sat at the front of the bus.

The Prime Minister joined the chant of “We want a lot,” and “We want more.”

The likes of Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Sunday’s match-winner in Berlin, Mikel Oyarzabal, wore white t-shirts with the number four on them in reference to the record number of times Spain have won the European Championship.

“For now, we’re not realising yet what we have accomplished,” Williams said.

The attacker, who scored the opening goal of the 2-1 victory, was also eager to thank Spain’s fans “for the love and warmth they brought the team”.

The team bus took them to Plaza Cibeles in central Madrid where thousands more fans waited to celebrate the success, following on from victories in 1964, 2008 and 2012.
