Madrid Wins Big In “El Gordo” Christmas Lottery

The world famous Spanish lottery, known as “El Gordo” (the fat one) is being drawn today, Monday December 22nd.

Spaniards across the country eagerly await news of if or what they’ve won – the average citizen spends €70 on tickets for El Gordo each year, according to the State lottery association.

The Christmas lottery, which is the oldest in the world is famous for giving out the most cash prizes per ticket purchased in the world with individual decimos ( a tenth of the prize number) able to bag €400,000 out of a total of an estimated €2.7 billion in prize money expected to be paid out this year.

2,776,000 lottery tickets have been sold in the Madrid region with the second biggest prize number of number 70048 drawn in the Madrid district of Chueca.

The winning number of 79432 went to the village of La Bañeza in Castilla y León. A total of 117 series were sold in the village to €468m to be shared among its inhabitants.

Final Winning Prize Numbers: 

  • ‘El Gordo’ (€400,000 per décimo): 79432
  • Second prize (€125,000 per décimo): 70048
  • Third prize (€50,000 per décimo): 90693
  • Fourth prize (€20,000 per décimo, on two numbers): 78477 and 25508
  • Fifth prize (€6,000 per décimo, on eight numbers): 23112, 60649, 77715, 25412, 61366, 94273, 41716 and 18669. 

In addition to these major prizes, there are smaller prizes like the pedreas, which award €100 per décimo to nearly 2,000 numbers.

The smallest prize is the reintegro, a cashback prize where you receive your €20 back if your ticket’s last digit matches the last digit of the winning number.
