Madrid´s Iconic Albéniz Theatre Opens Its Doors After 14 Year Wait

One of Madrid’s finest theatres has reopened after an extensive renovation which now includes the capital’s latest boutique hotel – the UMusic Hotel complete with stylish rooms and a rooftop terrace.

The iconic Teatro Albéniz, located just a short walk from the Puerta del Sol in Calle de la Paz was originally opened 80 years ago replacing a previous 18th century building.

It closed its doors in 2009 and was due to be demolished.

Instead a popular campaign under the banner of “Plataforma Salvar el Teatro Albéniz” (Save Albéniz Theatre Platform was launched to keep this actors’ favourite venue alive and in 2016 was declared a Madrid cultural heritage site (Bien de Interés Patrimonial).

On 17th November, the Madrid regional premier, Isabel Diaz Ayuso was in attendance as  it opened its doors with the premiere of the musical production “Company”, by Stephen Sondheim and directed by Antonio Banderas.

Spanish acting legend,  Antonio Banderas, produces, directs and stars in this classic musical considered by many theatres critics to be a masterpiece of the genre.

It will run until the 14th February.

“Company” premièred on Broadway in 1970 and won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Thanks to Antonio Banderas, this is the first time that this great classic on the musical scene has been performed in Spanish.

First performed in Malaga, then in Barcelona, it has finally come to the capital.
