New Year’s Eve – Sol Closed From 10pm As Nacho Cano To Sing Covid Tribute

As Madrid heads towards the finishing line of 2020, health and hygene protocols remain in place for the capitals traditional New Years Eve celebrations.

The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida Navasqüés has announced that the Puerta del Sol will have limited access with the metro and train exits closed from 9.30pm and the whole zone cleared of all people by 10pm.

The police will be mounting a perimetre barriers from Callao, Sevilla and  Jacinto Benavente to block anyone apart from residents from entering.

Madrid´s bars and restaurants will be allowed to remain open for the celebrations and the curfew set to begin at 01.30.

Instead of the crowds gathering to hear the clock strike midnight to begin the one minute of Las doce uvas de la suerte grape eating to greet 2021, there will be a solo musical performance from one of its most famous sons.

Nacho Cano, the founder of the legendary 80s group Mecano will be giving a solo performance as a tribute to the victims of Covid. The group were one of the most influential of the  “Movida Madrileña” of the 1980s.

He will play one song; “Un Año Mas” before the clock on the Palacio de Correos building strikes midnight.

He composed the official wedding music for Prince Felipe´s wedding to Letizia in 2004.  

Spain has registered more than 50,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
