NGO Leads Fight To Free Trafficked Women In Madrid
A leading NGO dedicated to the fight against the trafficking of women for prostitution has hailed a success in freeing victims in Madrid.
Five suspects have been arrested and eight victims identified after authorities worked with the Our Rescue and Interpol to dismantle a group accused of sexually exploiting women in rented properties.
In a press release obtained by the Spanish National Police in Madrid, the raid took place on 22nd April with officers raiding the building and kicking down an apartment door where they arrested one woman and searched the apartment with canine units before leading the detained women away in handcuffs.
The operation involved cooperation between Spanish police, Colombian police, and Interpol.
Officers carried out two searches and seized EUR 11,000 in cash.
The Spanish National Police said: “Five arrested in Madrid. Eight victims identified. Two searches. EUR 11,000 seized.”
They added: “They formed part of a criminal organisation dedicated to the sexual exploitation of women in rented homes.”
They also said that it was a “joint operation by the police with the Colombian Police and the collaboration of INTERPOL and the NGO ‘Our Rescue’.”
INTERPOL said in a separate statement: “INTERPOL was pleased to support this joint action against human trafficking.
“Another strong example of international cooperation leading to concrete results, with five arrests and eight victims identified.”
