20th Hay Festival Segovia 11th – 14th September

The 20th edition of the Hay Festival Segovia, Spain’s leading gathering of ideas and thought, culture, art and literature, will take place from 11 to 14 September with an ambitious
programme that will focus on the major political and social challenges facing the Europe today.

The festival features more than a hundred speakers from some twenty countries, who will help to offer different perspectives that encourage dialogue and generate new conversations.

The multidisciplinary programme, comprising more than sixty events, activities and conversations, has been joined by: Daniel Rieff, American political analyst,British Hispanist and writer Giles Tremlett, renowned for his work on the contemporary history of Spain; and Alia Al-Senussi, a doctor and renowned figure in the world of contemporary art.

They have been joined by, among others, journalists Teodoro León Gross and Juan Soto Ivars, who will discuss the practices of disinformation linked to natural disasters.

“Festivals like this one highlight the power of words and dialogue in tackling the challenges presented by today’s rapidly changing world”,’ explains Sheila Cremashi, director of the Hay Festival Segovia.

Among the most prominent voices in thought and politics are those of the former EU Foreigh Affairs Minister, Josep Borrell, and the former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, as well as the professor, jurist and author of essays on Europe and the global order, José María Beneyto.

On the international stage, there will be former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta and former British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg; the vice-president of UBS Europe, Miriam González Durántez; journalist Andrea Rizzi, correspondent for Global Affairs at El País; and philosophers A.C Grayling from the United Kingdom and Rob Riemen from the Netherlands.

The list of international participants also includes Somali-British poet and essayist Momtaza Mehri, Norwegian journalist and author Teresa Grøtan, and British author William Chislett.

Completing the programme are the exhibitions ‘Lost & Found’, which maps literary London, and ‘Letras por la libertad’ (Letters for Freedom), featuring previously unseen photographs by Walter Reuter. There will be floral displays designed by Peggy Johnson and Anne Fouetillou. In addition, the Plaza Mayor will host a surprise British design project, The Dancing Bench, organised by the British Council, Festival Concéntrico and Segovia City Council.

As part of the festival, on Wednesday, 10 September at 7 p.m., the Telefónica Foundation Space on Gran Vía in Madrid will host the event “Fictional journalism: a day in the newsroom of the Europa Tribune”. As if it were a sociological experiment, attendees will be invited to take part in the reality of a fictional newsroom,participating in the conversations and debates that arise during decision-making.
