Sixty Years On Paul McCartney Rocks Madrid
He first arrived with the Beatles in 1964, where they played in Las Ventas to a rapturous Spanish crowd. At the time Madrid´s bullring was the only venue in the capital with a big enough capacity for the Fab Four.
Sixty years on and this week sees the return of Paul McCartney, who is playing two nights at the WiZink Center as part of the Get Back Tour.
Speaking to Spanish media before the first of two sell out shows, the 82 year old British rock legend said he was “so happy to be back” in Madrid. It is the first time he has played in the capital since 2016.
Sir Paul McCartney who co-founded The Beatles, which went on to become the biggest selling band in rock history is also one of successful musical composers of all time and was knighted for “services to music” in 1997.
The singer also took the opportunity of his visit to Madrid to take a swipe at bullfighting as a long standing opponent, with a digital campaign on Gran Vía´s bus stops saying: “I am Paul McCartney, and I oppose bullfighting.”
However most Madrileños seemed unpeturbed by his views and is unlikely to have disrupted his visit.
McCartney has written or co-written a record 32 songs that have topped the Billboard Hot 100 and multiple winner of awards including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1999), an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award and no less than 18 Grammy Awards.
The Got Back Tour began in 2022 and will end next week in London.
