Operacion Salida Begins With Overhead Drones

The summer rush to the coast does not appear to have been too affected by the coronavirus as Madrileños join other Spanish city dwellers for their annual summer gettaway.

This weekend sees the start of the DGT´s ( Direccion General de Trafico)  Operacion Salida 2020 campaign.

This will be accompanied by a drive safely and responsibly campaign entitled “Este país no puede soportar más muertes”  ( the country cannot bear any more deaths) in reference to the 28,000 fatalities recorded this year due to Covid-19.

The Spanish minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who presented the plan today said that this year was likely to be more complicated to predict given the coronavirus siutation and whilst there has been small numbers of new outbreaks including 18 news cases confirmed in Madrid in the last 24 hours, the situation is under constant review and the possibility of re-introducing lockdown measures cannot be ruled out.

In 2019 some 91 million traffic movements were recorded during the months of July and August as city dwellers  take their annual holidays in their family pueblos or vacation away.

The principal dates for Operacion Salida 20 are the weekends of 3rd – 5th July, 31st July – 2nd August, 14th August – 16th August and with Operacion Retorno finishing off the campaign from 28th August to 2nd September.
