Madrid Hotel Worker Arrested For Hate Crime Against Morrocan Football Team
An employee at a five- star Madrid hotel has been arrested for allegedly committing hate crimes against the Moroccan national team staying there.
The worker is alleged to have posted on social media that the Moroccan footballers staying at the Madrid Eurostars hotel were: “F….Moors. I s…t on Ramadan and their f…ng dead..” The team are staying at the hotel ahead of their friendly game against Peru at Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano Civitas Stadium.
The 27 year-old male, who is believed to have been employed as a temporary waiter at the Eurostars Hotel Tower, asked players to take selfies with him.
He then uploaded the images to Instagram with the xenophobic insults and tagged the Moroccan team’s account, with the post quickly receiving over 100,000 views.
Hotusa, the group that owns the hotel chain released a statement saying. “We wish to offer our most sincere apologies in relation to the unfortunate, reprehensible and unacceptable comments of a racist and xenophobic nature.”
The incident comes just a week after Morocco joined Spain and Portugal in mounting a tri-country bid to host the 2030 World Cup.
During the 2022 World Cup Morocco knocked out Spain from the tournament.
The man is expected to be in court this week.
