Three Dead As Massive Gas Explosion Rips Through Madrid Building
Three people are dead and eight further confirmed as injured after a massive gas explosion ripped through a residential building shortly before 3pm today.
The explosion destroyed at least four of the floors of an eight-story building at 98 Toledo Street,by the Puerta de Toledo, causing a shower of rubble and leaving a dense column of smoke hovering over the area.
It is believed that the building belongs to the Archdiocese of Madrid and adjoins the church of La Paloma. A priest from the church has confirmed there were no injuries from the blast at the church.
A next door residence for elderly people has been also been evacuated.
A stream of 9 Madrid Fire Bridade engines and 11 SAMUR ambulances raced to the scene to treat the injured and secure the area.
The cause of the explosion is being investigation but it is being reported as being connected to gas.
