Oficina del Español Launched To “Defend and Strengthen” Spanish language

The Madrid regional premier, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, has launched a flagship initiative to promote the Spanish language and culture in the capital.

The newly created Oficina del Español´s principle role will be to “defend and strengthen” the Spanish language as well as to promote Madrid as a destination for learning the language for foreign students.

Of the 140,000 students who came to study Spanish in 2019, just 18,000 chose to Madrid, with Sevilla and Barcelona both ahead as popular destinations in a market estimated to be worth about 30 billion Euros a year.

The regional government will holding a series of cultural events from 28th September to 12th October to promote the initiative including concerts, conferences and workshops by artists from Spain and South America.

The 12th October sees the traditional Dia de Hispanidad celebrations in Madrid with full military military parade through the city to mark the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492.

In addition the government will be holding further activities and events with the Royal Spanish Academy as the Cervantes Institute.
