One Dead As Wildfire Threaten Northern Madrid
One person has reportedly died and dozens of others admited to hospital as a wild fire in the Madrid municipality of Tres Cantos took hold yesterday evening.
Some 180 people were evacuated of 180 people from their homes, in Soto de Viñuelas, Fuente El Fresno y Ciudad el Campo, according to Madrid’s regional authorities.
The victim, who had been flown by helicopter to the La Paz hospital had suffered 98% burns on his body.
More than 100 firefighters and the Madrid regional emergency 112 emergencies units were deployed on the ground and in the air to extinguish the flames.
“The fire is now contained,” Madrid’s emergency services agency said.
The fire affected more than 1,000 hectares.
Favourable winds helped ensured the blaze did not spread further.
A prolonged heatwave in the Madrid region is set to continue this week with temperatures of around 40 degrees expected according to Spain’s state meteorological agency, AEMET.
