San Juan Fire Under Control But Risks Remain
The forest fire which broke out around the San Juan reservoir in the municipality of San Martin de Valdeiglesias, in the north of the Madrid region on Saturday 31st July has been brought under control after raging for much of the weekend.
The fire which was reported around 6pm, spread quickly due to high winds in the area destroyed some 50 hectares and threatened holiday homes and infrastructure.
Eight fire fighting teams including 5 helicopters fought the flames which caused the closure of a section of the M501, by the village of Navas del Rey.
The area is still smouldering and there is still a risk that it could re-ignite due to the continuing hot and dry weather in the area.
