Spanish Wine Tops The World Rankings

The Spanish wine industry has had a nice end of year present in the form of the annual Wine Spectator Awards for best wine of 2020.

This year the winner was Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 with a maximum 96 points awarded.

The Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva beat other Spanish contendors including Único de Vega Sicilia, Culmen and Valderiz.

The wine is the showcase vintage from the Finca Ygay which is part of the Marqués de Murrieta winery in La Rioja.

The wine was released in January of this year after spending 24 months in American oak barrels and then perfected in the bottle for 5 more years.

The wine was hailed as exceptional and received near top marks from other leading international wine guides and critics including the German Falstaff ( 100 points), the UK´s Decanter Magazine ( 97 points) Spain´s Guia Gourmet ( 97 points) and Robert Parker with 97  points.

María Vargas, the Marqués de Murrieta Chief Winemaker said “This wine’s strength is undoubtedly the impeccable balance between each and every one of its components. The excellent 2010 vintage year has given us a Castillo Ygay that will be unforgettable.”
