Teenager Sucked To His Death In Municipal Fountain
This is the moment firefighters and paramedics attend the scene where a 16-year-old boy died at a public fountain after being sucked into a pipe while playing around with friends.
The tragic incident took place in the city of Mostoles on the outskirts of Madrid when a group of youngsters were playing in the fountain at Finca Liana Mostoles Park.
Local newspaper El Mundo said that bathing in the 30-centimetre-deep fountain is prohibited.
Tragedy struck when some of the teens went to the fountain’s control panel and turned up the water pressure which sucked the victim into a pipe.
A preliminary investigation suggested the teens removed a mesh cover that protects the controls.
The victim’s friends tried to rescue him but were unable to, so they called the emergency services.
It reportedly took rescue workers over 50 minutes to free the boy from the fountain pipe.
The emergency services tried to reanimate the teen for over 30 minutes, but without any success.
A psychiatric team has visited the mother’s house to inform her about her son’s death and offer support.
The centre-right Popular Party in Mostoles, in opposition to the centre-left PSOE political party, asked the council to check all the security panels of the city’s fountains to prevent a similar incident.
Both parties sent their condolences to the victim’s family as the investigation continues.
