Thousands Of Liverpool Fans Expected For Athletico Madrid Encounter
Thousands of travelling Liverpool fans are expected in the Spanish capital this week for their Champions league group encounter with Athletico Madrid.
The British Embassy has issued a statement on its Facebook page advising fans to visit the government´s page for information on travel and safety.
The match takes place on Tuesday 19 October at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, with a kick off time of 9pm.
The facebook post as fans to “take the time to check out this page: https://www.gov.uk/…/uefa-champions-league-group-stage…. It provides information on getting to the stadium, restrictions at the match and general safety tips.
The post also urges fans to be “familiar with the current entry requirements for Spain: https://www.gov.uk/foreign…/spain/entry-requirements”.
Liverpool presently lead the group with 6 points from 2 games while Athletico have 4 points from 2 games.
Athletico are the reigning Spanish Liga champions.
Liverpool fans have fond memories of their team lifting the Champions League winning trophy after beating fellow Premier side Tottenham at the stadium in the 2019 final.
The two sides have met frequently in the Champions League, most notably, last season when Athletico knocked out Liverpool, who were then the reigning champions,winning 1-0 and 2-3 respectively.
The last leg at Anfield has been under the spotlight recently for being played as the world was about to enter lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The decision to go ahead with the match was a controversial one at the time, especially as Madrid´s schools had just been ordered to shut down but thousands of Spanish fans were permitted to travel to the game.
