Young Woman In Coma For Two Years Finally Home

A young woman who suffered a near-fatal allergic reaction to a pistachio milkshake is finally going home after spending more than two years fighting for her life in hospital.

Marta Perez, 21, almost died when she drank a milkshake the contained traces of pistachios, which she was allergic to, in 2022 and had been receiving treatment at the Vithas Valencia Consuelo Hospital in Valencia, in Spain, ever since.

She had asked if the shake contained pistachio prior to drinking it but had been told that it did not contain the nut.

The girl, then just 18, went into cardiac arrest and although doctors managed to revive her, she spent the following two years in a minimally conscious state.

But she received innovative and specialised therapies for neurological damage and slowly started to recover.

She had to relearn everything, including simple tasks such as eating, picking up things with her hands and even speaking.

The footage shows her exercising in a bid to improve her condition, with Marta seen in a sling suspended from the ceiling as a man helps hold her head up.

Although she is still a long way from full recovery, Marta has now been allowed to return home and start her rehabilitation at the Uner clinic in Alicante, where she is already working on physical exercises.

Thanks to her mother, Maria Verdejo, the young woman continues to make progress in her recovery.

She has been fighting tirelessly to ensure her daughter receives optimal outpatient treatment close to their home in Ibi.

Maria told local media on Thursday, 27th March: “We are very happy and grateful. It was about time we had some good news. We had to fight hard, but finally [it paid off].”

As she has shown on social media in recent days, the young woman exercises and continues to work hard to improve.

Maria said: “Marta’s progress is very visible. Even if they don’t want it to be, you can’t say it isn’t there.”
