Gas Explosion In Salamanca District Leaves Two Dead

An explosion in a residential building in the Salamanca district of Madrid has left 2 dead and 19 injured today, Friday 6th May.

Madrid´s 112 Emergency Services said of the 19 victims, four have been taken to hospital with serious injuries, one of them seriously injured, following an explosion in an apartment of the building in the upmarket Madrid neighbourhood.

It is believed that the two dead were working at the building.

Firefighters and emergency teams arrived at the scene immediately whilst SAMUR ambulances set up a makeshift treatment centre on the street.

Teams are still working to clear debris of the building searching for further victims

The explosion at Calle General Pardiñas 35, on the corner with Calle Hermosilla, is thought to have been caused by a gas leak.

The blast caused extensive damage in the street with windows blown out and cars damaged.

The city council have started an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Last year an explosion in Calle Toledo caused by a similar gas leak that workers were repairing left the building destroyed and more than a dozen victims including three dead.
