Gran Via remodelling to finish early

Gran Via works and remodelling to finish early.
Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena´s promise to have the Gran Via car free by the end of her expected term of office in May 2019 looks set to be fullfilled with the announcement by José Manuel Calvo, her minister for the remodelling project that the works will be finished as early as 15th November 2018.The works, that have caused considerable disruption to one of Madrid´s main traffic arteries and still divide opinion as to the wisdom of closing it down to through traffic.
From November the Gran Via will only be open to bikes, buses, and VTC vehicles and will have widened pavements and will create a new APR ( residential priority area) which will further reduce access.
The works which also include the planting of 248 trees to “greenify” the central zone and it is no secret that City Hall has unpublished blueprints for the banning of all private vehicles in the entire central area which it is hoped will go some way to improving Madrid´s often poor air quality and pollution levels.
