Peter Dougherty, financial planner at BISSAN Wealth Management, has little free time for puzzles or board games these days. He’s too focused on providing cross-border financial solutions to expats who live in Spain.
It’s a bit ironic, though, because Peter knows his work has similarities to assembling a jigsaw puzzle. As he explains: “When clients first come to us, they often mention how they’re making financial decisions one by one, with little or no sense of coordination with any other piece of their finances. What they seek is a coherent idea – like a picture – to consider whether each investment decision they make fits together.
The first step in putting together a jigsaw puzzle is to look at the picture on the box top. Until we know what shape the puzzle will take, we have no idea how the pieces should fit together.
At BISSAN, we construct a financial plan for our clients that helps them see what the ‘picture on the top of the box’ of their financial life looks like. In it, we incorporate a client’s goals and dreams – their own retirement, assistance to elderly parents, purchase of a home, financing their children’s education – whatever they may be.

Yet, an uninsured catastrophic loss or liability could upend it all in an instant.
After it puts together a financial plan for a family or individual, BISSAN continues its work in two important ways: providing ongoing investment advice and assistance as well as updating each plan to reflect changes in market, employment, investment, and family circumstances.
All of which will leave Peter Dougherty little free time in the foreseeable future to get started with his unopened jigsaw puzzle boxes.
