Joana Vasconcelos Exhibition Brings Contemporary Art to Liria Palace
Madrid´s most prominent private residence, the Liria Palace, owned by the Duque of Alba has opened a unique exhibition featuring the work of Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, one of the most prominent creators in the contemporary art scene.
The exhibition which was opened last week by King Felipe marks a significant moment for the palace, as it is the first time the Portuguese artist has brought her work to an inhabited palace, blending her contemporary art with the historical and artistic richness of the space.
For this exhibition, Joana Vasconcelos, internationally acclaimed for her monumental sculptures and installations, has transformed the rooms and gardens of Liria Palace. Her work engages with one of the world’s most important private art collections, which includes pieces by the likes of Velázquez, Goya, Rubens, Titian, and Murillo.
This marks the first time the Lisbon-born artist has brought her works to a palace that is still in use, unlike her previous interventions in historical spaces such as the Palace of Versailles. This unique setting creates a special dialogue not only between her art and the palace but also between the artist herself and the Duke of Alba.
Vasconcelos emphasizes that the Liria Palace is not just a museum of the past but a living space. Her work reflects this idea, engaging with the personality of the Duke of Alba, who still resides there.
The exhibition runs until 31st July.
