Madrid Now Epicentre Of Spain Covid Surge

The surge of Covid-19 cases continues in Madrid which has registered 15,000 new infections since last Monday. The figure represents around a third of the 46,000 newly registered cases in Spain over the same period.

The number includes some 300 hospitalizations which now stand at over 1,500 active cases including 165 in intensive care.

The regional government´s deputy health head, Antonio Zapatero  has advised residents in the worst affected districts of Vallecas, Valverde, Carabanchel, Usera in the south of the capital to stay indoors.

The regional heath authority has not ruled out stricter conditions for public spaces including bars and restaurants

In addition the nearby towns of Fuenlabrada, Parla, Móstoles and Leganés are registering increased infection rates.

The Madrid town of Tielmes, situated 40 km from the the capital is in local lockdown with all residents confined to homes and all bars, restaurants and public spaces including the municipal swimming pool closed until further notice.

The figures come as the President of the Madrid regional government Isabel Diaz Ayuso is expected to announce the conditions for the re-opening of the schools in September.

To date Spain has registered 420,809 coronavirus cases of which 28,872 have died.
