Madrid Set For Week Of Pride Festivities
Last Friday 28th June saw the pregon or starting pistol for the 2024 Pride celebrations marking the anniversary of the original Stonewall riots and now celebrated as International Pride Day.
The Madrid Pride is one of the largest in the world and brings tens of thousands of visitors to the capital to enjoy the celebrations and take part in the many activities that are organised.
This festivities kick off in earnest this Wednesday 3rd July with the Pride Proclamation.
The packed programme fo this year´s pride includes the following highlights:
- Friday June 28: Chueca’s Pride.
- Sunday June 30: Feathers and Paws.
- Wednesday July 03: Pride Proclamation.
- Thursday July 04: High Heels Race.
- Friday July 05: Madrid Summit 2024.
- Friday July 05: 17th Edition Mr Gay Pride
- Saturday July 06 19h00: Pride Parade.
The celebrations usually begin every year on 28 June (International Pride Day, which commemorates the StoneWall riots that marked the beginning of the LGBT+ protest movement). The festivities then continue for a week with a wide range of political activism, cultural, and fun activities. The biggest day is the afternoon of the first Saturday in July when the Madrid Pride Parade takes place from Atocha train station to Plaza de Colón.
Although the majority of activities are held in the Chueca neighbourhood, one of Madrid’s most cosmopolitan and vibrant areas, Pride is enjoyed across the entire city. Stages hosting concerts and shows are set up in Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, Plaza del Rey, Puerta del Sol and Plaza de España by the LGBTI Pride Organising Committee which is composed of the National Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (FELGTB), COGAM, the LGTBIQA+ Madrid Collective and the Association of Companies and Professionals for Gays, Trans people and Bisexuals (AEGAL).
