Banksy Exhibition Opens In Madrid

The iconic Círculo de Bellas Artes is holding an exhibition devoted to the global artistic phenomenon known as Banksy whose work has defined a genre and whose identity still remains a closely guarded secret.

The universe created by this iconoclastic artist, who has challenged the game rules of contemporary art, is represented by 50 pieces in this unique exhibition shown for the first time in Spain.

The British street art artist has brought together poetry, politics, graffiti and powerful provocative imagery which has brought his art to the forefront of our times.

Banksy is considered to be one of the leading representatives of contemporary Street Art . His works, which are often satirical, address universal themes, such as politics, culture or ethics. Banksy once characterised graffiti as a form of underclass “revenge”, and has been quoted as saying “If you don’t own a train company then you go and paint on one instead.”

In 2020 Banksy gifted a painting titled Game Changer to a hospital in the UK as a tribute to the country´s National Health Service fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

His best known works include the original serigraphy of the Girl with Balloon series.

This is a unique opportunity to enjoy similar pieces to the one that was destroyed  by the artist himself in an unprecedented auction at Sotheby’s in London and where the canvas that had been auctioned shred itself as it went through a shredder that had been installed at the bottom of the frame.

The exhibition runs until May 2021
