Former UK Ambassador To Spain Takes Up Key WTO Post

The former British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley CMG has been appointed to be the UK´s  Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), United Nations and other International Organisations based in Geneva.

Tweeting about his new appointment, which takes effect in March 2021, Mr Manley wrote that he was “ honoured” and “excited to build on work of Julian Braithwaite to promote free trade, defend human rights, and secure effective multilateral solutions to our shared global challenges.”

Simon Manley was highly rated during his tenure in Madrid from 2013 and 2019, which coincided with the Brexit referendum result and the negotiation for subsequent bilaterial agreements between the UK and Spain.

The W.T.O role is a key post to represent the UK now that is has left the European Union, with whom it has still to finalise a trade deal.

In the event of a “no deal Brexit” the UK will be trading under WTO trade rules.
